Description
This is a rather bizarre vintage medical lot to help babies born with a cleft palate. Because they are born with a gap in their upper lip and/or the roof of their mouth they have tremendous difficulty feeding. Although rarely used today, these orthopaedic plates were used to form a vacuum in the roof of the mouth to assist in feeding until the child is old enough for corrective surgery. Also included are a pair of rare impressions and a soother. Theses actual examples appeared in the 1965 publication of Obturators and Prosthesis for Cleft Palate – Their Use and Construction which will also be included in the sale for provenance.
